Each of the Museum Futures host museums will be offering volunteer activities this autumn, specifically to young adults interested in learning more about museum work. We are hoping that these experiences will ignite an interest in museums as a career option. And maybe a few people will apply for the Museum Futures paid traineeship that wouldn’t otherwise think this kind of work was for them.

Museum Futures Partners

The British Museum will partner with over 20 museums across the UK over the next three years. Trainees will be based at their host museums, and will benefit from the network of other trainees, and mentors. 

In the 2019 cohort year there will be 8 trainees based at the following museums: 

  • Museum of East Anglian Life

  • National Museums Liverpool

  • Norfolk Museums Service

  • Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove

  • South West Heritage Trust

  • York Museums Trust

  • Garden Museum

Training on digital skills related to museum collections

The Museum Futures programme has the management and access of collections and museum data at its core, recognising that an emphasis on data in its many forms is something becoming increasingly important to every area of museum activity. All traineeships will strongly reflect the importance of data and its long term preservation and access. There are four key digital concepts we will be exploring through regular network training sessions: digitisation; data management; digital access and engagement; and digital preservation.
